Our History

Row for Freedom

In 2011/12 a crew of five ordinary women rowed the Atlantic Ocean in the Row For Freedom campaign. They achieved the extraordinary by becoming the first female crew of 5 and the fastest women ever to row the Atlantic Ocean. It brought £5million worth of media attention globally, was supported by Sir Matthew Pinsent, PM David Cameron, Dame Kelly Holmes, Kirsty Gallacher, and Bear Grylls amongst other high profile political, celebrity and sporting support. Post row the campaign resulted in hundreds of international speaking opportunities.

The remarkable thing about Row For Freedom was that the crew had no prior rowing or sea experience. They used their love of sport to make waves about a cause they were passionate about. It’s an empowering thought that by uniting, the crew could take on an ocean and that’s the message we want to inspire you with.

Our mission is to use the positive power of community and sport to bring freedom from human trafficking and modern-day slavery. We approach the issue of trafficking with a positive and empowering message: What can you do for freedom? Using sport everyone can get involved and everyone can make a difference whether spectator or participant, amateur or professional.

It was out of Row For Freedom that Sport For Freedom was born.
